And thanks for everyone who responded to the contest question. There are some great answers so far to the question who is your favorite character. It’s going to be hard to pick one winner…I want to give everyone something. The winner will be chosen on May 6 and the book sent out shortly after. Thank you again!

I wanted to thank everyone who reads Watching Criminal Minds. I especially appreciate it when you take the time to comment. Thanks so much. To show my appreciation, I would like to offer a copy of the new Criminal Minds book by Max Allen to one lucky reader. The book comes out May 6. Here’s a description:

An elite team of FBI profilers is called in to help Chicago detectives investigate a series of bizarre murders. Though all are violent and disturbing, the crimes seem unrelated—until profiler David Rossi makes the connection. He recognizes each grisly tableau as one modeled on the crime scenes of three of the country’s most notorious serial killers: David Berkowitz, Ted Bundy, and Jeffrey Dahmer.

Someone is taking the cult of true crime to terrifying extremes, and with so many killers left to emulate, Rossi wonders how he can possibly profile a killer who’s hiding within the killer profiles of others…

To win the book, tell me who your favorite character is and why. Pretty easy…the more detailed, the better. Since the book comes out May 6, you have until then to email me your answer. You can also leave it in the comment section, if that is easier for you.
Once again, thank you.

Jump_Cut_Winner.jpg

Congratulations to Lociloco. She is the winner of the Criminal Minds Jump Cut contest. She’ll receive the new CM-based book from Amazon. Jump Cut is available for sale today.

Lociloco chose “Riding the Lightning” as her favorite episode, which is one of mine as well. It is always heartbreaking to watch. If you missed this episode from season one, you can read a recap at tv.com, or better yet, you can get the netflix or something. It’s really good.
Here’s a You Tube clip from the ending of “Riding the Lightning.” This is very sad; the mother is making the ultimate sacrifice to make sure her son has a good life. I just watched it and it gives me chillls.

Willing Suspension of Disbelief

Monday, October 29th, 2007

TG_wire_image.jpgSydney Morning Herald writer Gordon Farrer wrote a review of Criminal Minds in Sunday morning’s edition. His complaint with the show:
“Sometimes Criminal Minds asks too much of its audience.”

Mr. Farrer is not a disbeliever in criminal profiling, though.

Catching murderers through psychological profiling might look like modern criminological magic to the amateur but Sherlock Holmes was a master of that science more than a century ago.

His problem is the cast. He mentions two in particular that stretched audience’s imaginations to the breaking point. One, Thomas Gibson as Agent Aaron Hotchner. He can’t get past seeing Gibson as Greg on Dharma and Greg.

I see straitlaced Greg from the sitcom Dharma and Greg, and worry that his dippy hippie wife (Jenna Elfman) will burst in and bugger up a crime scene with her madcap Lucille Ball act.

Another character he takes exception with is now-gone Agent Gideon, played by Mandy Patinkin. His past characters also get in the way of the enjoyment of the show. He sees Inigo Montoya and Dr. Jeffrey Geiger instead of the BAU profiler.

Also mentioned is James Van Der Beek. How can sweet little Dawson have multiple personalities, kill innocent people, post the murder videos on the net, and torture a sweet little FBI agent? Farrer writes, “He [Van Der Beek] hasn’t been getting a lot of TV work since the series was canned, true, but surely that’s an overreaction.”

I thought this article was kind of funny - I liked that Gordon Farrer wrote what he thought and didn’t sugarcoat anything. Also, he brings up a point for which Criminal Minds is often criticized: the believability of the characters.
Spencer Reid, played by Matthew Gray Gubler, is one of those imagination-stretching characters. In an interview with Matt Romanada of Primetime Pulse, Matthew had this to say:

sherlock_holmes.jpg

During the pilot…Chris [FBI agent and consultant] was there and I went to ask him something about what would my character do in real life. He looks at me and says, “There is nothing realistic about your character! You would never make it in the FBI. You would get made fun of. You would never exist. Heck, you couldn’t pass your gun test.”

He’s also way too young to have made it into the BAU. But, as Matthew said in that same interview, knowing his character wasn’t strictly realistic “gave me this freedom to do what I want.”

I think shows like Criminal Minds should be realistic enough to feel true and believeable and fantastic enough to be entertaining. Criminal Minds is a good blend.

Tonight on Criminal Minds

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Tonight’s episode is called “Seven Seconds.” A child is taken from a mall. The BAU is called and locks down the area. They interview everyone there to try and find information on the child’s location. In Criminal Minds style, it’s a race to save the child.
I saw the preview for this last week. I don’t know about the episode, but the idea is terrifying. It makes me want to keep my daughter inside forever or tie her to me when we go out. It is really something that can happen to anyone - and kids are so fast. If you turn your back for a second, they can be out of sight. This is my nightmare, so it’ll be a hard show to watch. (I always thought my mother was weird because she HATES to watch shows that have children as victims.) Last week’s episode, “Children of the Dark,” also featured child victims. They’re so defenseless. It’s horrible when adults die, but you can kind of see how they can at least fight back. The little kids had no chance.
So “Seven Seconds” airs tonight at nine on CBS. It looks like a good episode - one of Criminal Minds exciting, tense ones.

CM Contest

Friday, September 7th, 2007

trophy.gifYOU could be the winner of a fabulous prize (not a car, money, or trip - it’s a book. YAY!)

I love to read true crime books. So if you want something to do while you’re not watching Criminal Minds, you could read about cases involving actual agents and crimes. Not, it’s not a bunch of cash, but it’s better than a pencil.

Write your idea for a new episode of CM. It can be about anything you want, as long as it hasn’t been done on the show before. You can write about the characters’ lives and/or investigations they are working on. It can be creepy, gory, or funny; whatever you want. Remember, the BAU is asked for help from local police agencies, so make sure you think of a good crime that the police need help with.

Guidelines:
*This can be as long/short, detailed as you want to make it. No word requirement!
*It must be an idea that hasn’t been done on the show.
*Email your entries to me by Friday, September 14. (Click on the CONTACT ME link on the right of the page.)
*(Maybe use quotes like they do on the show??)

The writer of the most original, interesting idea will receive a copy of Anyone You Want Me To Be by retired FBI profiler, John Douglas.
You don’t have to write an entire episode - just a summary. You also don’t need to be a great writer. What counts is the idea.
