Criminal Minds was #2 in the 9:00 time slot, beaten by American Idol on Fox.

I liked this episode; I liked that it focused on Hotch without sacrificing the story about the case. Here’s what happened:

Hotch visits Boston to see Detective Shaughnessy, who was the lead detective on Hotch’s first BAU case ten years prior. Shaughnessy is on oxygen and sick. He tells Hotch that years ago, he made a deal with the Boston Reaper. He sent the BAU away and agreed to stop hunting the killer if the killer in turn stopped murdering people. And it worked. But the agreement was good as long as the detective was alive, and he was dying. The killer, he said, was watching and would begin again.

There is another Reaper murder - a couple actually - and Hotch gets the team on the case. Another couple is killed, this time by someone posing as a cop. The killer takes one thing from the victims and leaves one from another victim. The team goes over the case, focusing on the one survivor. A man was out with his younger girlfriend. She was killed and he was stabbed several times, yet lived. The team enlists the help of a journalist for the survivor’s address - this journalist has written about the case extensively and knows him. Hotch and Rossi go to see George, and you get the impression that he’s terrified of the Reaper. Yet he’s remained in Boston all of these years. Hotch gets a phone call at his hotel - it’s the Reaper, offering him the same deal as Shaughnessy. Except Hotch says he doesn’t make deals and hangs up.

Immediately after, the unsub boards a bus and kills the driver and passengers. He paints his signature, the Eye of Providence (the all seeing eye) on the bus. This devastates Hotch, who feels like it’s his fault. Next comes my favorite part of the show. Hotch gets very upset - tearing up. Rossi takes out his gun, and says Here use this then. He says that if Hotch takes on the responsibility and guilt for every crime, he’ll end up like Shaughnessy or Gideon. After this great speech, Hotch just replies, “Put your gun away. It’s a bit dramatic.” Rossi replies that his exes - all of them - thought was was very dramatic. I loved how they had a serious, dramatic speech followed by a moment of levity. It seemed very natural, and it fit Hotch’s personality perfectly. I think that Rossi is the only one who could’ve spoke to Hotch that way.

Ok, so, the team figures that the surviving victim has some significance to the killer because he had left George’s glasses at the scene of one of the new murders. My summaries sort of ramble along, don’t they? Anyway, they figure he might be in danger. The team splits up to look for him. At one location (apparently he had two or three addresses? Am I right? I had visitors over.), the team finds copious amounts of his blood. At another, Morgan is searching a house and all of a sudden a dark shape rushes him and they go through the window. It’s the Reaper, who takes Morgan’s credentials and leaves him with a bullet. He would have killed him but Morgan had been knocked out - the killer wouldn’t have had the fun of torturing him.

The team wonder why the Reaper was obsessed with George. They look into George’s girlfriend and find out she was a teaching assistant from Michigan. JJ points out that the Reaper had Shaughnessy post the ad in the Michigan paper. Emily says George’s girlfriend had only been in Boston for four weeks before she was killed. They think George lied to them about wanting to propose to her since they would have only just met. Hotch calls Garcia and asks her to look up George’s aliases. She sees that they all worked as teaching assistants. Garcia then finds one of the names was fired for sexual assault with one of his students. Hotch realizes George is the Reaper. They have Garcia triangulate Goerge’s position by tracking Roy’s incoming calls. Derek realizes the belongings left at the crime scenes all belonged to George.

The reporter meets George, who stops the pretense of being a victim. He’s mad at the reporter for not writing the story about Shaughnessy’s deal with the killer. He is going to shoot him when the team comes in. He’s arrested. Later we see the team returning to the BAU and George in jail. He cuts his arm and drinks the blood. Later, they find out he escaped. He was found vomiting blood and was taken to the infirmary where he escaped. He had plans for all the jails in the area, anticipating the day he’d be arrested.

I wonder if he’s going to pop back up in another season…that’d be interesting.

How’d you like “Omnivore” ? The title, by the way, refers to the type of killer. He didn’t discriminate when choosing victims. He killed men, women, young, old, making him an omnivore.

Alex O’Laughlin

by

alexeye I know a few of you are excited about Alex O’Laughlin’s upcoming appearance on Criminal Minds. If you’re a fan of the Moonlight star, then you’ll be happy to hear he’s coming back to TV. According to TB Television, he is going to play a doctor in CBS’s new medical drama, Three Rivers. He’ll play Dr. Andy Yablonski, who is a workaholic. He is separated from his wife and lives in a hotel near the hospital. Carol Barbee, who wrote for Jericho, will be in charge of the scripts for Three Rivers. Curtis Hanson, who directed 8 Mile will be heading production.

alex-oI’m not sure when this will air, but his episode of CM, “The Big Wheel,” will be on April 29. The photos of him in this episode are almost unrecognizable. It’s amazing. Here’s one from TB Television.

A Little Bit of Nothing

by

thomas-gibsonNothing really new in Criminal Minds world, except a new episode for tomorrow. “Omnivore” deals with a killer form one of Hotch’s first cases. It sounds good. I will do live blogging again. This is fun - I go through CoverItLive.com and can basically provide up to the minute comments on the episode. But it’s also good for chatting. All you have to do is go to Watching Criminal Minds. I’ll have the post ready a few minutes before nine, and all you need to do is click “Play.”

It’s really easy. I did it last night at Watching House, and all you have to do is enter a display name and submit a comment. You don’t have to sign in or anything, which can be a hassle if you only want to write a quick note. You don’t need a password, you don’t need to sign your life away or get on my mailing list (I don’t have a mailing list, so that works out well). You can pop in to say hi or comment about an aspect of the show that you like. Last week, Mollie came on and we chatted about the show and also Friday Night Lights, which I now have on my Netflix queue. So it’d be awesome if you could join me during the show or a commercial break to let me know how you’re liking the show. You can stay the whole time or just pop on to say how awesome I am…I mean how awesome CM is.

jmOff the set, Joe Mantegna is out on the town doing good and helping people. I don’t know when he has time to sleep what with working on CM, making movies, and doing charitable events. He was the host of the Shane’s Inspiration dinner on March 14. Shane’s Inspiration is a charity that seeks to eliminate the bias children with disabilities face. They help create accessible playgrounds and programs that help children of all abilities thrive. This organization was founded by Catherine Curry-Williams and Scott Williams, who lost their son, Shane, to spinal muscular atrophy when he was only a few weeks old.

This star-studded event helped raise money and awareness - Shane’s Inspiration has created 22 accessible playgrounds in LA and around the world. Playing is crucial to kids in helping them develop good physical and social skills. Those with disabilities won’t be left behind - this is such a great organization. Joe Mantegna has a daughter with autism and is active in helping children’s charities and those related to disabilities.

In another note, if you read the blog Criminal Minds Fanatic, you know there is going to be a Criminal Minds convention this summer. The people there have done a tremendous job of organizing this, and it promises to be a great time. It’s in LA and will go from July 16t through the 19th. LA is as far from me as you can get and still be in the US, so I can’t go. But if you live in the area or want a fun, sunny vacation, “Crim-a-Con” would be an excellent way for ardent fans to learn more about the show. I’m also guessing - don’t want to start rumors, but I have a feeling - that you may get to meet some interesting people related to the show. If you’re interested, check out this blog (but come back here because I give away $10 gift cards sometimes, and I love you!). They’ll have details coming soon about the convention.

And that is about it. Join me tomorrow for live blogging or just sit back and enjoy “Omnivore.”

Upcoming Episodes

I love Hotch. I’m going to have a t-shirt or a bumper sticker made that says “Got Hotch?”. So I’m very excited about “Omnivore,” which is airing Wednesday. Our profilers go to Boston where Hotch revisits one of his first cases because a notorious serial killer is back in action. On the promo, which is a few posts down, he says he’ll make a deal with Hotch. If Hotch stops hunting him, he’ll stop hunting the victims. That’s on Wednesday, the 18th. Tune in -another new one. I feel spoiled. I may be doing the live blogging thing too, so let me know if you’re interested in joining in.

Here are some brief details of other upcoming episodes, courtesy of TV.com.

Season 4, Ep 20: Conflicted

Season 4, Ep 21: A Shade of Gray

Season 4, Ep 22: The Big Wheel

When a serial killer sends a videotape of one of his crimes to the BAU, the team discover a hidden message from the murderer begging for help in stopping the killing. (This is the one with Alex O’Laughlin!)

CBS’s Other Crime Shows

by

withouttracecoldcase_l
CBS has had success with its crime procedurals, especially the CSIs, NCIS - which is hugely popular, and of course, Criminal Minds. Without a Trace and Cold Case are two more, which have been solid if not stellar performers for the network. I like both on a “Hey, this is on,” type of basis, and apparently lots of other people feel as tepid. Both of these shows may be facing cancellation in the near future. According to EW, tough economic times are pinching CBS’s budget and they may have to cancel these shows.

A source at CBS says: “They no longer have the type of ratings that justify the massive overhead.” I read somewhere that the woman who plays Detective Lilly Rush, Kathryn Morris, is one of the most highly paid actresses in television. Apparently the lack of super ratings for Cold Case is not worth such a high price tag. Both shows have been working on cutting costs to avoid being canceled - which includes cutting pay or forgoing raises. CBS also stopped yearly raises for many of its dramas. So if you’re a fan of either show, you may be very disappointed come May. This is when we should know for certain if they’re a go for next year.

The Hunted

by

exorcist Last night’s episode of Criminal Minds dealt with a rogue priest who was exorcising people, killing them in the process. Prentiss’s old friend, Matthew, was among the victims. I liked the focus on Emily because we haven’t seen much of her and it was good to get some insight into her character. It was also interesting to me that Rossi and she kind of teamed up, against Hotch’s orders too, to delve into the case. The interaction of the team members was good to see - espeically Morgan. I’ve read a lot of comments that Morgan was being “holier than thou” about the case, but I didn’t see that. I saw him being skeptical and objective…not a jerk.

As to the case - what did you think of this episode and storyline?

Updated: Criminal Minds was #2 for its time slot last night. American Idol was #1 with 24.9 million viewers. Compared with the last new episode, though, CM was up 2% in adults 25-54 and added 140,000 viewers age 18-49.

The episode for next week also looks good…and it has my favorite, Hotch! Here’s a Youtube of the promo.

We’ll see how this goes. And if you dont’ have a laptop and your computer isn’t near your tv, then you can always add your thoughts during commercials. I’m starting a little early - it’s about a quarter to nine - to make sure everything is working and to give me some time to put my daughter to bed.

Prentiss/Demonology

by

paget81 Finally! Some more Paget. In tonight’s episode, “Demonology,” Prentiss has some connection to a victim in a series of killings. According to FearNet, the killings or deaths occur during exorcisms. These kinds of episodes scare the crap out of me. When I was little, my mother (hi, Mom) wouldn’t allow us to watch The Exorcist or even read the book, so I have a Catholic fear of demons. We also weren’t allowed to have Ouji boards. Apparently, a priest is doing rogue exorcisms. I guess that there not as common in real life as they are on TV, and this guy is not going by the regulations that the Church sets out. So the question is: is he helping fight a demon or is he just plain crazy? Hmmmm. TV Guide did an interview with Paget regarding this episode and Alex O’laughlin’s upcoming episode. Here’s a clip, and for the rest, click here.

TVGuide.com: Might “Demonology” change the way we look at Prentiss?
Brewster: Possibly. She has a past and it’s a little controversial, as to how she knows this victim, a friend of hers from when she was a teenager in Rome. She asks Hotch, “Can I look into this?” And then she uses her position as a federal agent questionably in seeking out the truth. And there is something that happened to her as a kid that….. Well, it’s risky what they wrote. We’ll see how people respond.

TVGuide.com: Speaking of Prentiss’ past, will we ever learn more about her mother, the ambassador?
Brewster: What’s kind of exciting is that at any time, the writers can create more history. But there’s nothing else this season involving my mom, who is, of course, Kate Jackson.

2008 YEAR IN REVIEW IN PHOTOSWow…and Hotch figures in because he stands up for her - I guess for using her position questionably. We’ll see! This sounds like a great episode! I can’t wait.

And don’t forget: I’m going to be doing the live blogging during the show. So if you want to comment, pop in at nine.

Trying Something New…

by

Ok: I’m stealing an idea from Randi at WatchingHouse.com. CoverItLive is a cool site that allows people to cover live events on blogs and websites…or in our case, television shows. What is Cover It Live? Well, basically it is a way for me to watch CM and provide commentary instantly. Say I like Prentiss’s shoes…I can just jot a note and there it is. It is a different way to do a summary of the show for those who didn’t get to see it or just want to follow along. Best of all, you can comment along too. Say you hate Prentiss’s shoes…You can write, “Katie, you’re nuts. Those shoes are hideous.”

Click on the Reader Information button above and you’ll get a quick little rundown. Basically, though, it’s a way to get updated content and have readers comment back, which would be fun. It’s not a chatroom though, because I approve all comments. But I think that’s fine too…you can comment about any aspect of the show that you want and add your own observations.

Criminal Minds fans are the most vocal and active in fandom, and this might be a way for us to be a bit more vocal too. So, I’ll try it tomorrow at nine. If you want to join, just pop on the site while you’re watching “Demonology.” If you’d rather concentrate on the show, you can always check out the comments later. To see how it looks, go to Watching House.

Hopefully, I’ll see some of you tomorrow night! And let me know if it’s something you’d enjoy doing each week.

If you’d like to be emailed a reminder of the event, just enter your email address in the box above and one will be sent to you. If not, just pop on tomorrow at nine eastern time. Thanks.

Paget Brewster turns 40 today! Happy Birthday to her - hope it’s a great one!

A Few Notes

by

mgg-11

Just a few notes for today: It’s Matthew Gray Gubler’s birthday!! He’s 29 today. Happy Birthday to him.
And Shemar Moore will be on The Bonnie Hunt Show today…hurry, it’s on at 9:00 on CBS.

by

I have a complaint! We don’t get to see near enough of Paget Brewster! Or Kirsten Vangsness yet in this season, but that’s another story for another day. Anyway, in an upcoming episode, we will get some insight into her character. In this week’s episode, “Demonology,” according to CBS, Prentiss has a personal connection to one of the victims in a series of deaths.” I’m glad we’ll get a little focus on her for a change. Anyway, until then, here are some pictures showing Paget’s eclectic style. Enjoy!

UK Question

by

question Today, I got an email from a CM fan in the UK. She writes:

when will the new season of criminal minds be aired on tv in the uk? i cant wait to see who was in the car that exploded at the end of the last series.

I had no idea it hadn’t aired yet in the UK, so I looked around and tried to find out for our friends across the pond (do people really say that?). The closest thing I could find to an answer was that since it aired in the US in September of 2008, it’s likely to be next year (perhaps fall of 2009?) before UK fans can watch the new ones. I’m sorry that I can’t find a more definitive answer. Does anyone know?

I also can’t figure out why CBS doesn’t offer episodes of CM online, like they do for the CSIs or NCIS. I did find a site that allows you to download the episodes for free and watch online. This is the site - I’ve never used it, but I googled and didn’t find any negative press about it, so maybe give that a try. I wish CBS would add CM to their collection of streaming episodes so we could watch it there. I thought they had but I couldn’t find it when I looked to answer this question.

Also, if you want to know what happens in the first episode of season four, “Mayhem,” you can always find a bunch of spoilers online. I prefer watching it myself, but the suspense would kill me! But if you have to know, TV.com has a very thorough recap that will let you know. Thanks for writing!

Washington Field Casting News

by

washington-field

Washington Field
, the new drama from Ed Bernero, has some casting announcements. Here’s a blip from TV Guide:

Eddie Cibrian and Teri Polo have been tapped to play husband and wife on Washington Field, CBS’ drama pilot from Criminal Minds boss Ed Bernero and revolving around an elite team of globe-trotting FBI experts. Think Super Friends, but minus the annoying purple monkey.

Cibrian’s character, Tommy, is the response team’s coordinator and a hazmat expert, says the Hollywood Reporter, while Polo will play Amanda, a medical forensics whiz.

Cibrian’s previous TV credits include guest spots on, well, virtually every ABC series produced in the past three years (but most recently, Ugly Betty).

Polo, best known for playing opposite Ben Stiller in the Meet the Parents pics, recently guested on TV’s Ghost Whisperer and before that costarred on David E. Kelley’s short-lived The Wedding Bells.

Another good crime show full of hot people. Are you going to watch?
