The Hunted

by

exorcist Last night’s episode of Criminal Minds dealt with a rogue priest who was exorcising people, killing them in the process. Prentiss’s old friend, Matthew, was among the victims. I liked the focus on Emily because we haven’t seen much of her and it was good to get some insight into her character. It was also interesting to me that Rossi and she kind of teamed up, against Hotch’s orders too, to delve into the case. The interaction of the team members was good to see - espeically Morgan. I’ve read a lot of comments that Morgan was being “holier than thou” about the case, but I didn’t see that. I saw him being skeptical and objective…not a jerk.

As to the case - what did you think of this episode and storyline?

Updated: Criminal Minds was #2 for its time slot last night. American Idol was #1 with 24.9 million viewers. Compared with the last new episode, though, CM was up 2% in adults 25-54 and added 140,000 viewers age 18-49.

The episode for next week also looks good…and it has my favorite, Hotch! Here’s a Youtube of the promo.

I am not as fond of episodes in which a team member is the catalyst of the criminal arc.

The episode in which Reid is kidnapped was good because the villain’s focus was really on the “sinners” and Reid got in the way. The episode in which Garcia was shot was also good because the villain was threatened by her in a logical way. But, overall I do not like a team member as personally involved when he is supposed to be professionally the hunter of truth.

I think episodes which are derivative of other well know plot lines are very hard to pull off successfully. I know as an ex X-File fan that the serious vampire episode stank, but the humorous one was okay. It’s simply that we, the viewers, know every twist and turn already.

TV and movie Rouge Priests are a dime a dozen; there have been at least a dozen on Law & Order over the years. The acting was great, both the rogue priest and Rossi’s friendly priest and I got a real kick out of the team describing the profile to a room full of priests instead of cops.

I will be unpopular, but there is something about the way Paget delivers Emily’s dialogue when questioning/accusing other characters that rubs me the wrong way. I cannot take her seriously and mostly say “enough already,” to the TV set when she is doing it. She wanted to blame the parents to the point of being rabid. I did not like it.

When Morgan gets stubborn, he is really stubborn, although too loyal to not help. Hotch was in a bad position once the FBI was officially not on the case, but I thought him phoning the Italian Embassy and getting immediate results totally unbelievable. I do not know why I can get into a million unbelievable things in a TV episode and then just burn out with one I cannot stand. In this case, maybe living in DC and having worked for several Government departments over the years, made Hotch’s phone call ridiculous. Maybe if he were an Assistant Director of the FBI, he would be the one to call, but as a Senior Special Agent, even in charge of a division like the Profiler Team, is just a no go. IMO, sorry if I am negative.

The ending; Emily entering a church, was awfully trite. If anything, I would have thought this experience would have driven her further AWAY from Catholicism.

So I have to say, I did not like this episode very much. I always love to see the team, but this one will probably stay mint on my eventual set of this season’s DVDs.

Maybe I dozed off, but I did not get the connection between the victims, the dead priest in Spain(?), and the exorcist. Can someone clue me in?
